Diabetes Mellitus in Dogs; Know the Symptoms

Diabetes is a complex disease caused by various endocrine system malfunctions. Why should dog owners be on the lookout? As many as one in 10 dogs develop a form of diabetes. Diabetes Mellitus- the most common and most dangerous form- is related to blood sugar and the insulin hormone. It is often found in dogs between 7 and 9. Risk factors include heredity, obesity, exposure to viruses or infectious diseases, and ongoing steroid injections.

The earliest signs often go unnoticed. Symptoms include:

  • Excessive Hunger
  • Lethargy
  • Excessive Thirst
  • Incontinence
  • and Weight Loss

Lethargy and incontinence lasting more than a couple of days are often the first signs, and these symptoms always warrant a visit to your veterinarian. The earlier the condition is found the more likely your dog will be able to respond to treatment and live a fairly normal life. Prompt treatment is critical because complications such as cataracts, blindness, kidney failure, severe live conditions, and ketoacidosis are more likely to occur when diabetes is left untreated.

The treatment for dogs with Diabetes Mellitus is much the same as for human diabetics: daily monitoring of sugar levels and injected insulin, supported by proper diet and exercise. Your veterinarian will conduct ongoing evaluations to determine the correct dosage and frequency of injections. A diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus can seem overwhelming, but soon you and your dog will make the adjustments and they will become a part of daily life. The return of your healthy, happy fur-baby will be your reward, and we will be here to help you.
