Pet Obesity Is on the Rise! Know the Risks of those Extra Pounds

Pet Obesity has become critical in the U.S with the latest reports showing an increase for seven straight years. Studies conducted last year found that 56% of dogs and 60% of cats nationwide are overweight or obese! The primary cause of pet obesity is simply that our fur-babies are taking in too many calories and getting too little exercise. And since we control what and how much our pets eat, the responsibility for maintaining a healthy weight rests with us.

For dogs, those extra pounds contribute to diabetes, osteoarthritis, knee, and joint conditions, exercise intolerance, and some forms of cancer. Sadly, an overweight dog has a decreased life expectancy of up to 2.5 years.

For cats, conditions contribute to obesity include age, hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, and pituitary gland or brain diseases that affect the appetite. Stress can also affect how much food a cat eats, especially in multi-cat households where cats may eat more and faster due to perceived competition. Although these and other conditions may increase the likelihood of feline obesity, overfeeding by humans is the number one cause.

As your pet's advocate, you need to determine if his weight is healthy, what and how much he should eat, how much exercise he needs, and if he is at risk for any medical problems. If you suspect that your pet is carrying too many pounds, we can help! Call us to make an appointment if you have concerns and be sure to ask your veterinarian about your cat's or dog's ideal weight during your next visit.
